This might be just my Amiga, but the OS3.5 version of Multiview seems
to like locking up from time to time. Anyone else noticed this happen?
Oh, and has anyone else stopped using their mouse because you can use
the keyboard to move around the icons, or does this novelty wear off?

Only when I try and load 8Mb JPEG files with only 7.9Mb of memory
left ;)

It's annoying me, because I used to use TAB to open the Execute Command
box - now it selects the RAM disk :)

I have used the facility, though, it's especially useful when you've
sorted your directories into alphabetical order and want to step to
Code without looking for the name (ran out of icons ;)

You've always been able to do that.... amiga and arrow keys, use shift to make
it "jump" IIRC. Have they changed it at all?

What does IIRC mean? In 3.5 you can use the arrow keys to scroll the
window, or press tab to make it select individual icons. Shift makes it
jump as you say. But it's smooth baby, it no longer refreshes (flicks).

It was. There were two, infact - a demo (in the appropriate sareware

Neat. I didn't pay much attention to the CUCD version anyway, 'cos
I ordered the full version + manuals + lots of other discounted
stuff using the deals anyway. Installing it only to have to install
it again to use my new product number would have been a bit stupid,

I would, but I need one as much as anyone else...
I still can't figure out how to edit the scanline/raytracing prefs
within the editor and I can't quite handle animation yet (I have done
one, but it was a tad crap). There's a bucket load of other stuff I
can't work out, too, like why the "A-(B)" boolean operator doesn't cover
up exposed sides, and why the polyon objects do the same thing each time
you select them after the first usage, unless you delete you're

The thing that makes the difference is how much money a magazine makes, and
not all of that comes from newsstand readership. It's also down to ads and
subscriptions. AF is budgeted through all of next year, even with a further
fall in readership and ads, so I wouldn't worry about it.

Hi Dan

AF is a profitable magazine, thanks to its broad range of advertising
revenues and its high subscription base.

In addition, Future has a much different cost structure to that of Emap, and
so has lower operating costs for each magazine, ensuring that it can make a
profit out of a magazine on very, very low circulation.

For example, Future's very first magazine (and my first freelance gig at
Future) was Amstrad Action. This mag closed when the circulation fell to
around 3,500, and even then it was making less than 1,000 a month in
losses.

It too had a very high subs base, which helped sustain it through to the
end. AF is in the same healthy position (feel free to jump in Ben if I'm
talking cobblers) so I wouldn't expect it to disappear any time soon.

Does someone out there know the specs of Z4(transfer speeds,n=BAbits of

Z3?
Also, the new Z4 board fits where in the A4000, in the expansion slot
or in the same place of the Z3board? If in the expansion slot, the
A4000 motherboard is getting too dated. They should do motherboards
along with accelerators, like that maybe the amiga wouldn=B4t be known as
dead to many. If it fits in the same place of the Z3 daughterboard,
it=B4s design(of the A4000 motherboard) deserves merit, it=B4s not dated,
and the modular motherboard design that to me and many would be the
best, has already been achieved same years ago!. That of couse if the
transfer speeds are good.
Anyway the advantages of zorro(autoconfig? etc. i don=B4t know it very
well) should be publicised, and maybe it could be even licensed to
other platforms, with the condition of having the name amiga in big
letters, for eveyone ot know the amiga is alive and it=B4s the best.
They=B4d think, wow, if this is the bus, how is the computer? What is
Amiga Inc. doing that they haven=B4t done this yet?
Those guys are getting us irritated. Do we have to do everything?

Thanks.
P.S. I hope Z4 is what it was expected to be, after all this talk, and

Probably because they have given up trying to find
people with relevant experience.

For this reason lots of companies do inhouse training.
That's how I started my professional career.

The attitude of my first boss was very much like Matt
Sealey's. He never once let me forget that my degrees
were of no value to him. He also was one of my best
teachers ever. To his credit, it took me only four
years to outrank him.

It is true; nothing beats practical experience.
However, the sort of analytical skills that you can
acquire through theoretical studies also come in handy :)

Ive never had any trouble with them, and although you cant order via
the web, you can order with a credit card over the phone. They are
very fast with delivering stock, and apart from Settlers II (never
arrived for obvious resaons - at which point I was in credit with them
until I had spent it (the prophet and a clip art cd)) and recently
Foundation Directors cut, which is out of stock, but Im assured will be
in before christmas I have had no problems with them whatsoever.

Disks dont work? send them back and they will check them out for you.
Only the disks mind, you dont have to waste postage money on the box or
anything.

+ you get a very nice booklet each month (which gets better in quality
and content every issue)

Enough reason to shop with them? No? Well, they also have a XMas sale
on at the moment making their cheap prices even cheaper!

Beat that.

No, it really is a technique to cut down applicants.

You get two classes of people - the generic "I have
a degree and therefore rule the world" type, and the
ones confident enough to apply for a job 'requiring'
a degree when they don't have one.

That confidence counts for more than a 3 year degree -
if you think you can beat the graduates to the job..

Yay! I have an Amstrad! An old CPC 464, Tape drive and green screen
monitor. Love Frontier Elite II, given away on Amstrad Action (to
which I subbed till the end). 8 minutes to load, vector graphics, damn
playable, I had at least 20 A4 sheets with planet information and
average goods cost on them! And that was just for the first galaxy.

LOL - I would have loved to have seen a 464 (or a 6128 for that matter) run
Elite II. I'm afraid it was only the original Elite that AA gave away on the

I had it crashing a lot. So I took a closer look at it and found out that just

Also, the decision to close CU wasn't taken purely on the basis of the
profit it generated. EMAP were going through a reorganisation and two
magazines needed to close for that reorganisation to take place.

The other victim was a Sega magazine with a circulation of 33,000.

The main problem is that what goes on the net isn't always gospel. Trust me,
we'll have stories on new Amiga if and when they happen, but right now,
there's bugger all going on. Talking of which, we've got a massiv 15M for
our CD again this issue from readers. Thanks guys...

PS. You probably won't hear about Jim for a long time. He signed a
non-competition clause when he joined Gateway/was promoted inside Gateway,
which means that he can't work for a competing computer company for at
least two years, otherwise he can be sued and will also lose a huge sum of
money in share options...

Oh yes - and that as well, though Emap have never admitted that the main
reason it sacrificed two profitable magazines was simply so that they could
move everyone into a smaller set of offices - even if we all know otherwise

Well, in the case of Sega Saturn Magazine, Sega Europe had just released
the last Saturn game that they were going to release in Europe. SSM was
going the way of Amiga Power, fun to read, but pretty pointless in it's
context. ...and at the time the Dreamcast was too far away to keep it
alive with EMAP having no intention of going for the official DC magazing
license.

So, you often use multiple windows and/or browser? I must admit that
I try to avoid using those when I can, because I know they tend to greatly
increase the chances of IB crashing :( If you stick with a single window,
then you should be a lot better off - hopefully, it will be fixed in 2.2.

Sounds like you haven't terminated the SCSI chain properly. The last
device on the chain, physically, must be terminated - other devices
should not be terminated. I'm guessing that your HD is the last
device on your chain, right? Check that termination is disabled on
your CD-ROM (there's probably a jumper to set it - see manual) and
enabled on your HD. Or you could just try switching the devices
around - i.e. put the CD-ROM at the end of the chain.

In short, check the termination :)

It's an ad hoc convention, so there's no start date.

Except it is precisely defined, whereas PMPO has more to do with picking

Nice idea, but I doubt it would work. A well designed, but late
arriving, standard has little chance against a well established de facto
standard. That's why most web sites use GIFs rather than PNGs.

Anyway, the marketing people would then have to find another way of
lying to consumers. At least these lies can be translated into truth, we
might end up with the equivalent of PMPO :(

Firstly, who said they were doing nothing? That fact that CDs are being
produced soon implies that isn't the case.

> As a person who produces video tapes, if I went to a bulk duplicator,
> and they screwed up, and wouldn't fix it. My first action would be to
> get someone else to get the job out on the market, then sue the one who

Secondly, many Amiga companies are in a rather precarious position as
regards cashflow. Paying out double duplication bills plus legal bills
may not be an option. It's a fact that legal battles aren't always won
by whoever is right, but by who can afford the best legal
representation.

Thirdly, it simply isn't possible to get CD duplicated at short notice
at this time of year, unless you pay a *huge* premium. CD duplicators
are booked up producing CDs for Christmas. Come January, they'll be
begging for business. This is why I initially suggested the duplicators
were employing delaying tactics, not to get out of redoing them but to
delay it until they had the time. If they admitted fault as soon as it
happened they would have to bump other, contracted, work to fit in the
new run.

The one on CUCD27, yes.

Sometimes A-(B) covers exposed sides, but its all seems a bit dodgy and
erratic. Maybe something I'm doing wrong? Can't think what.
Rearanging the object tree structure (or atleast, the position of the
polygons in it) helps with the polygon object problem.

No, because anyone who programs in C would be able to
pick things out from your little 'program' which suck
all the fun out of it. It's one thing to make a joke,
but making an inaccurate one? ;)

Whoopee Be do!.

Sorry But I am having a real hard time getting excited about this.

However I agree it is a step in the right direction, I read somewhere

Two years is the normal contract, but Jim had quite a bit of leverage when he
signed on at Gateway. I'd be surprised if he hadn't negotiated a shorter
non-competition clause, it's not an uncommon thing for people to do in that
job market.

Just a thought, do cosmic rays REALLY affect computers at all, or
what?

I mean, if they can make astronauts see white flashes in their eyes,
surely some could get down and dodge around in the middle of one of
your chip registers or something? :)

Well in theory yes...
As an example soft errors can occur in your RAM (which is why we use parity
internally) which is usually explained (in text books) as "spontaneous
radioactive decay of an atom in the chip's casing which causes a single bit to
lose it's charge" - it's not beyond belief that some of these errors could
actually be caused by cosmic rays.

On a slightly different note: A mate of mine did a degree in physics at Kings
Uni, and his final project was to build a laser (I think it was a liquid laser)
- he started hearing complaints from the computer room next door about their
computers crashing, and it turned out that his laser worked at the same
frequency as the Pentiums - the EM interference it was putting out was high
energy on a very narrow band at exactly the right frequency to completely screw
a Pentium!
Not *quite* relevant, but still.....

Only if the photons have sufficient energy to trigger enough of the the
transister gate, which would have to be very small. If a high energy
photon where to strike a MOS transistor and ionize part of it, a small
electric field would be generated. In MOS transistors, electric fields
are used to control current flow, and the smaller the transistor the
smaller the electric field required trigger it. Therefore a chip with
really small strips would be liable to randomisation by background
radiation.

Not cosmic rays, no (some does get through, but not very much), but
there's plenty of radiation about as it is - granite, radon gas,
uranium, plutonium, nuclear fallout etc etc...

When you get really small chips, there's also the problem of quantum
tunneling - the tendancies of electrons to jump trough things which
would overwise block them.

I don't know what size mask would be needed for these problems to occur,
but I doubt we'll get any further than 0.9 microns.

You do have the CD and HD on different addresses don't you? They have
to be. It doesn't matter which ones (as long as your drivers, or other
program parameters are looking for the device at the right address).

Also, make sure the last thing is terminated (the thing on the absolute
end of the cable), and anything plugged in the middle is unterminated.

Nothing was bouncing, I just didn't get any mails (I still read from the

At the quiz, or at you for the off-topic post? :)

BTW the link is that JFK instigated the Apollo programme. Since you
didn't post to afb-movie, it makes sense to look for a non-movie link :)

When I heard Jim's speech at the World of Amiga, it gave me hope for
the first time in years. It was as if he was some kind of Fuhrer,
making the crowd believe every word he said. A few weeks later, all
that hope was in tatters. Now that I am rehabilitated again, I still
feel there is hope for the Amiga, I just don't believe it will be as
great as Jim prophesised...

Yes and no. Okay, we've got one of two choices that we know it may be,

Cosmic rays are attributed to circuit breakers tripping on extremely
high voltage lines from power stations (the long cables make them more
susceptible). If cosmic rays can knock out high powered equipment, then
yes, there's no reason why they can't knobble sensitive computer parts.
And it is a quite widely accepted theory anyway (not just that can cause
a temporary random action, but also cause permanent damage).

We used to do the same thing in electronics class - screwing up other
students experiments with radio gear by transmitting an unmodulated
carrier on a wire strung along the back of the benches. ;-)

Though the worst thing was where our TV lab was situatued, right next a
pneumatics lab. The last sound any TV tech ever likes hearing is

It *isn't* a big joke, and it *never* was. Only stupid people
carried that notion on for more than a fortnight. A twisted
publicity stunt to get a failing startup company noticed? Most
probably, given that they were finally bought out by another
company.

The systems they have NOW seem to be a lot more realistic, using
software emulation of Amigas in ROM (but you need a real Amiga
ROM to make it work - it's just UAE but without Windows in other
words ;)

I sure would like to see one going to see if the emulation is
up to scratch, or even any good at all. Or if it's anything
more than UAE burned into a ROM.

Hi Everyone,

My brother-in-law successfully installed OS3.5 onto his A1200.

Besides the standard 2mb chipmem he also has 32mb fastmem.

Opening up the Workbench window, then the C dir window disabled the pulldown
menus as he was told there was not enough memory. I take this to be chipmem as
it went down to about 54k!

Booting up on the Workbench floppy disk enabled him to open up various windows
and to pull across various files without chipmem loss.

Is there something amiss here?

Thanks

Bill

Sorry to bother everyone, I probably will sound like a goof, but I have
a problem. I recently pulled out my A1200 from storage to find out if
it was still in working order after 17 months of exclusively using my
first new PC (Pentium II class). I am going to S.Korea for a year, and
wish to use the A1200 and A500 I have to occupy my time until I get
back.
Anyway, while trying the A1200 out, I could not remember the key
shortcut to get to the screen mode menu on start-up, so I could change
it screen to display in NTSC mode, intead of a European display (can't
remember what it's called). Almost all the programs I have are in NTSC
format, as is my monitor.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
P.S. I leave for the Orient today. Wish me luck.

hmmm, is he still running FastPrefs or something? Use IPrefs and the
WBCtrl and then FastMem will be used instead of ChipMEM - also use
FBlit if you dont have a gfx card...256 colour WB screen with the new

I had one before it caught fire. Yep, poof! The thing went up. After
dunking it in the sink I found that it was jam packed with spider's webs.

Treasure Island though! Now there IS a few memories... trying to tempt
